Vet-LIRN
The Veterinary Laboratory Investigation and Response Network (Vet-LIRN) is managed by FDA's Center for Veterinary Medicine. The primary objective of Vet-LIRN is to promote human and animal health by partnering with over 40 state and university veterinary diagnostic laboratories. Vet-LIRN laboratories help FDA investigate potential adverse events affecting the nation's animal food and drug supply by conducting testing of animal foods, animal drugs, or animal diagnostic samples. Vet-LIRN laboratories develop chemistry and microbiology testing methods, maintain preparedness by optimizing and harmonizing testing methods, assist with case investigations related to adverse event reports, and participate in network proficiency exercises. Since 2017, Vet-LIRN has tracked antimicrobial resistance in bacterial pathogens from animals, particularly companion animals, in a successful application of the One Health paradigm.
